This program has the objective of training students in research. Graduates will demonstrate a capacity to design, conduct and report sustained and original research. While the research is conducted under a supervisor students are expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently.

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Design) is not restricted to those with a design background; applicants from any academic area are welcome. In general, applicants should have a master degree, or an honours degree with first or upper second class honours, or other qualifications and professional experience deemed equivalent. A person whose first language is other than English must provide such evidence of competence in the English language as is required by the committee, on the advice of Swinburne International, before admission to candidature will be approved.

Students must determine their research area of interest first and locate a supervisor for their research higher degree. Then they should send in the completed research higher degree candidature form with certified copies of all transcripts of results and proof of academic qualifications to Admissions (H6), Swinburne University of Technology, PO Box 218, Hawthorn Vic 3122 Australia or submit the application to Student Information Centre (on any campus).
